Regardless of the number of bonus points your account has been targeted with (my account has only been targeted with a 45% bonus), you will have to purchase a minimum of 2,000 points in order for the bonus points to be awarded - do note that the maximum number of Marriott Bonvoy points that you can purchase each year is capped at 100,000 (bonus points do not count towards this limit).
Marriott Bonvoy points are typically priced at USD 12.50 per block of 1,000 and being targeted with a 45% bonus is effectively a 31% discount. If your account has been targeted with a 55% bonus, this is a 35.5% discount which is pretty decent especially if you use your Marriott Bonvoy points wisely - use them for PointSavers redemption and combine it with a Free Night (from redeeming five consecutive nights on points) for the most bang for your buck.
When I visited Bali last month, I made a last-minute redemption at the W Bali Seminyak when room rates were priced at approximately USD 460 a night for the cheapest room. A PointSavers redemption was available at 40,000 points and I went ahead with that option instead - if your account has been targeted with a 55% bonus, 40,000 points will cost you approximately USD 322.60 only (effectively 30% off the rate) and while there are better ways to get more value out of these points, it shows you how much flexibility you can enjoy while traveling when you have a healthy stash of points sitting in your account.
With that being said, you should also try to make some tentative plans for your Marriott Bonvoy points before making the purchase as these assets are subjected to devaluation which means the value of these decreases over time. If you are based in Singapore, you may consider using the Amaze Card from Instarem to save on foreign currency charges of up to 3.5% (but do note that the DBS Woman’s World Card or any other credit cards issued by POSB and DBS will no longer issue points for all transactions made via the Amaze Card).
With international travel resuming at an accelerated pace, it is important to be forward planning when it comes to trips and locking in a redemption booking means you can always cancel it (typically up to 2 days prior to arrival) or rebook it if required. This allows you to lock in attractive rates on potential dates of travel while you ponder over the possibility of making the trip.
