Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles are typically priced at 2.96 US cents each so you can save quite significantly if you were to take advantage of the 50% bonus. If you are based in Singapore, you might already know that a Singapore Airlines flight in Business Class from Singapore to Japan requires 52,000/70,000 KrisFlyer miles on a Saver/Advantage redemption. If you do not mind stopping over in Hong Kong, you can fly on Cathay Pacific Business Class for just 22,500 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles - this works out to just USD 443.25 each way before taxes.

While it is still possible to travel on Japan Airlines Business Class using Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles, the trick has been severely devalued over the years - you used to be able to travel within Asia for just 25,000 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles which includes the return leg (somewhat), but you will now require 50,000 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles to travel just one way on Japan Airlines - still reasonable in peak periods but not a fantastic deal anymore. There are plenty of sweet spots if you plan on traveling further though - travel between Asia and North America requires just 50,000 and 70,000 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles each way for Business Class and First Class respectively.
