Naked in the Sky (Melbourne, Australia) - Great View and Good Food in Fitzroy
Before anyone gets too excited, there are no naked photos of anyone in this post at all. Naked in the Sky is an extension to Naked for Satan. Before I even tell you about Naked in the Sky, I had to find out why exactly is Naked for Satan named as such. With a curious mind, I went forth to find the answer to my question and this is what I found out: A guy named Satanovich (hereby known as Satan) used to distill moonshine in his underpants during the sweltering summer months. Since the moonshine was illegal, patrons used to use the code phrase "Let's get Naked for Satan" to gain access to this well-guarded but highly-regarded liquor.
Naked in the Sky is an extension to this amazing building - it is an open terrace that is located in Fitzroy with an attached indoor bar, lounge and restaurant. Similar to serving up Pintxos in Naked for Satan (which is located below Naked in the Sky), the food here at Naked in the Sky is influenced by the cuisine of the Basque county. I arrived at this beautiful location, walked through Naked for Satan (seriously, this place is gorgeous!) and found myself in the back of the lift that took me straight to Naked in the Sky. Oh and since I got there on a weekday between 12PM and 4PM, tapas were only $9 each - truly a steal!
Obviously, I chose a table outdoors with a view to boot. There is quite a selection of tapas and you may find some of them a little unfamiliar so just grab a menu, head up to the bar area and make small talk with the staff.
The first dish that I tried was a little more conservative - Grilled Beef Eyefillet Skewers, Piquillo Peppers, Salt - but it was done perfectly. The beef was done medium well with all the juices locked in and the flavours were further enhanced with simple sea salt. The piquillo peppers which were slightly bitter also helped to provide the dish with a different dimension. Needless to say, I was excited at how every single dish that was presented looks picture perfect. Maybe it was the sun, maybe it was the autumn wind or maybe it was just an alcohol-ready liver but I really wanted to order everything on the menu.
As I have mentioned earlier, Naked in the Sky runs a really decent promotion on these small plates on weekdays from 12PM to 4PM (and Sundays from 6PM) at just $9 per plate. Some of these plates are almost double in price during regular hours so you are definitely getting a ton of value here (one of the perks of being a tourist - you get to enjoy the city on weekdays too!). I also opted for the Baked Camembert, Truffle Paste, Chestnuts, Ciabatta which did not disappoint. Even though I have had a baked Camembert wheel before (seriously, how do you even go wrong with this), I did not have it with an actual truffle paste and hey, chestnuts! I love the nuttiness and the deep earthy aroma from the truffle paste - all these alongside freshly baked ciabatta bread that is sliced and ready to be slathered on with dairy goodness is basically heaven on a plate.
If I had to pick a favourite dish from my afternoon at Naked in the Sky however, it would definitely have to be the Fried Lamb Ribs with Piment d'espelette and Aioli. The piment d'espelette is made from chillies from the Basque region of France and it was named after a village in the Nive Valley of France. As opposed to cayenne powder, the piment d'espelette does not kill or drown the gaminess of the lamb but it complements it by providing a hint of fruitiness and a subtle heat that is eliminated by the aioli on the side. If you love your lamb, this dish would definitely not disappoint.
Naked in the Sky along Brunswick St in Melbourne is definitely worth a visit. If you are already at Carlton Gardens, take a slow stroll over, check out Chapel St for old records and end off the morning with an afternoon drink and a fantastic view of the area here at Naked in the Sky.
