Hotel Review: Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy (Deluxe Ocean View Room) - An East Side Staycation for Foodies
Accor ran a flash sale last week offering up to 60% savings on rooms in Singapore with complimentary breakfast thrown in. Since there was a really attractive bonus points promotion as well, I made an impulse decision to stay at the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy which is located just across from Parkway Parade in Marine Parade. While the property is not what I am usually accustomed to when it comes to staycations, it is a nice change of surroundings but it does come with some quirks so you might want to consider them before booking a stay here.

I do not currently hold any significant status in the Accor Live Limitless program but I do have Silver status from my Accor Plus membership. As such, I have decided to book a Deluxe Ocean View Room (instead of the lead-in room category, Superior Room) for this stay as I wanted the room to be on a higher floor. Consistent to the benefits for a Silver member, I did not receive any further room upgrades for my stay but my request for a 2:00 PM late check-out (on a weekday) was confirmed during check-in. The check-in process was rather fuss-free and I was told that bookings for the gym, swimming pool, and breakfast, must be made by scanning one of the QR codes on the TV.
The Deluxe Ocean View Room here at the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy measures 32sqm in size and they are located on the top floors of the property. As far as I know, the Deluxe and Superior rooms do not have any real differences apart from the levels in which they are located - Deluxe Rooms are located on higher floors and those with an ocean view are located on the top floors. The room that I was assigned to was located on Level 15 of the hotel, just one level below the highest floor which I believe is reserved for Executive Rooms and Suites. Upon exiting the lift on Level 15, I noticed that there were a couple of creepy-looking dolls displayed in a cabinet along the dimly lit corridor. While I am not easily spooked by such things, one of my friends did share a rather scary encounter that his friend had during her stay at the property. If you are quite easily spooked out by these things, you should consider asking the front desk to assign you to a room on a floor without the strange-looking dolls.
To be extremely honest, I expected the rooms at the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy to be much older but they seem to have been refurbished at some point. The hotel looks really dated from the outside but the public areas and the rooms actually seem fine - I would not go as far as to call them modern but they definitely looked newer than some luxury hotels in Singapore. The king-size bed is on the firm side but I actually did manage to get quite a good rest during my stay here (even though it was probably fuelled by the food coma from eating around the area). Most of the light controls can be found next to the bed but you will have to switch off the individual bedside lamps and standing lamps manually.
Truth to be told, I was also somewhat skeptical about an ocean view when I booked this room but I am happy to report that the Deluxe Ocean View Room that I was assigned to did indeed come with a slightly-obstructed view of the sea (and East Coast Park). It also looks out to Parkway Parade where you will have plenty of restaurants to choose from but the real gems are located on the other side of the property towards Katong and Joo Chiat.
There is a small lounge chair with a bedside table located next to the window in the room and this is great for taking-in the sights from the surrounding area. The air-conditioning in the room worked great (even though it is definitely in-need of modernisation) and the room was kept to a nice 18-degree Celsius during my stay (I love sleeping in the cold). With that being said, this small lounge chair area also kept me up on my first night here at this property (no thanks to my friend’s story which I shall not repeat).
During the check-in, I was handed a small care pack which consists of a small bottle of hand sanitiser, as well as disposable face masks. This practice is fairly common in Singapore in a post-COVID world but there are properties that choose to save on these costs. While they are not essential, it is always nice to have extra disposable masks when you are on a staycation in case the one you have breaks or something.
While the interiors of the room look fairly modern (it actually reminds me a little bit of JEN Singapore Orchardgateway), the television is definitely from the past - I cannot remember the last time I saw a TV with such a huge bezel but it does serve its purpose. It goes without saying that this is not a Smart TV so you can forget about streaming anything onto the television.
The rooms here at the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy come with very basic coffee- and tea-making facilities. There was literally a stick of freeze dried coffee and a sachet of Lipton tea - both of which I would not wish on my worst enemy. If you enjoy chamomile tea before bed, bring your own. If you enjoy an espresso or two throughout the day as I do, the bad news is you will not find this in your room. The good news is there are plenty of great cafes in the area so if you are willing to walk a little, you will find yourself a good cup of joe in the area.
There is also a mini fridge located directly under the electric kettle - it is cleared out so there is plenty of space for you to stock up on your own beverages and snacks (which you can purchase from Parkway Parade opposite). Honestly, the fridge did not look especially clean to me though so I would probably only use it for canned and bottled drinks.
The bathroom of the Deluxe Ocean View Room is fairly basic with everything that you expect from a four-star property. Honestly, I did like it better than the Hilton Singapore (which I have stayed more than 30 times since last year) and while it is in no way anyone’s dream bathroom, it is actually quite spacious for a room this size.
All of the rooms and suites here at the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy come with a bathtub (most of them have a shower and tub combination). While it is not necessarily the most inspiring bathtub around (you will not get a winning Instagram shot here), it was very much appreciated after spending the afternoon walking around Katong and Joo Chiat in the sweltering heat.
Bath amenities are provided by an in-house Mercure And Me brand - functional but definitely not something you will take home with you.
As an ALL Silver Member, I was given a drink voucher (valid for two drinks in a double-occupancy room) which I then redeemed for two glasses of white wines at Feast Roxy. This is fairly typical across most full-service Accor hotels and while it is nothing to shout about, I will not say no to a glass of wine in this heat. The pour was actually rather generous but if you prefer to have something non-alcoholic, you may redeem your drink voucher for a juice or soft drink instead.
If you have booked an Executive Room or Suite, do note that the Executive Lounge is currently closed and you will get to enjoy drinks and canapés at Feast Roxy from 6-8 PM daily instead.
The Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy does have an in-house Chinese restaurant (Jia Wei Chinese Restaurant) which is apparently quite good and if you have an Accor Plus membership, you will be able to save up to 50% off on the total food bill. While I did not manage to try it on this stay, I am planning to check it out when I return to the East Side again in the near future.
If your room comes inclusive of breakfast, it will be served at Feast Roxy but do note that a prior reservation is required - you will have to scan the QR code on your TV to make a booking. If you are unvaccinated or if you are staying with an unvaccinated person, breakfast will be sent to your room at a preferred time slot. Each registered guest will be able to select one breakfast set from a simple menu - you will not be able to order extra as this is not a buffet.
To be honest, I actually skipped breakfast at Feast Roxy on the second morning since the food quality was rather mediocre. The options are fairly basic but apart from the sunny side ups, everything else reminded me of breakfasts dated US hotels. Now if you have an option of booking a cheaper rate where breakfast is not included, please go ahead and take advantage of that as there are plenty more options to choose from in the area. It is not terrible but save your caloric intake for something better as staycations are all about pampering yourself, right?
As I have mentioned previously, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes in the area but if you are looking for a solid cup of coffee, Homeground Coffee Roasters is seriously an institution - it has been around for years and it still continues to serve up great-tasting food and drinks. I took the opportunity to visit a number of newer coffee places in the area like PRAIRIE by Craftsmen but left disappointed.
Obviously, the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy is not the best hotel around but for what it is worth, my stay has not actually been too shabby. Considering how I have only paid around S$250 nett for two nights here in a Deluxe Ocean View Room (and this stay actually triggered bonus ALL points), it is actually a pretty good deal if you are thinking about exploring the East Side of Singapore without having to worry about parking and freshening up. The hotel is also in close proximity to East Coast Park so you can go for an evening or morning jog along the sea if you wish. If you do not yet have an Accor Plus membership, I highly recommend getting one soon as there is currently a flash sale offering up to 13% savings.

Planning a beach day can seem simple, but unexpected issues often arise. Mornington Peninsula’s beaches are popular, which means dealing with potential crowds, fluctuating weather, and poor preparation can easily ruin your outing. Arriving late might lead to parking challenges, and picking the wrong beach can limit your planned activities. Many forget important items that could make or break their beach experience, leading to stress and missed opportunities for relaxation.
