Hotel Review: Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore (Garden Wing Deluxe Room)
The Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore remains to be one of Singapore's most luxurious hotels. There are three wings to the hotel and each one of them offer a distinctive experience - check out my stay at the lush Garden Wing and the opulent Valley Wing here. The hotel also houses one of my favourite Italian restaurants in Singapore - The Waterfall (which just recently refreshed their menu here!).
As you may already know, the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore is currently running the "Time Out" Weekend Staycation Package which is perfect for an indulgent weekend if you are looking to spend quality time with your loved ones. Just as a quick summary, the package includes a night's stay in the property's amazing Garden Wing Deluxe Room, daily buffet for two adults, a movie marathon menu, Bellini hour (in your very own room) as well as a three-tier English afternoon tea experience at the Lobby Court - click HERE to check out the rates now!
The Garden Wing Deluxe Room is almost identical to the room I've had in 2014 - the previous one came with a view of the beautifully-landscaped pool while the room I had this time has a city view. While the room does not have a partitioned-off living room, it does offer some kind of living space being 50 sqm in size. In fact, there's even a separate lounging area and a private balcony for you to soak up the sun.
Similar to a resort, the bedroom floors here in the Garden Wing are parquet and therefore more suitable for people with allergies. Even though the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore in itself already feels like a clean break away from city life, the Garden Wing amplifies this further with its tranquil surroundings augmented by the sound of water falling and the smell of lush greenery.
I love the small lounging area in the Garden Wing Deluxe Room - the sofa is amazing to fall asleep on (before or after enjoying a good book) and if you feel like it, you can always leave the balcony door open and turn on the ceiling fan instead. Just remember that the air-conditioning automatically shuts off when the balcony door is open so if you want to keep your room suitable for the polar bears, keep it closed!
There is also a number of magazines that you will find in your room in case you do not have your own reading material but with unlimited free Wi-Fi across the whole property, there's almost no reason not to simply log on and do some reading. In fact, you get to download magazines and newspapers for free on PressReader too when you are connected to the Wi-Fi. If you have a long flight out of Singapore, you should definitely take the opportunity to download your favourite magazines to read on the flight.
I love that the room is packed with modern-day comforts and indulgences - you get your very own Nespresso coffee machine, a fully-stocked minibar, plenty of spirits and liquors as well as snacks if your are feeling a little peckish - do note the price tags on these items though I think the price tag on a bottle of Perrier Jouet is pretty decent.
The marble bathroom in the Garden Wing Deluxe Room features a double-sink, deep soaking tub as well as a separate rain-shower. Gone are the days where a combined bath and shower is adequate. If you are thinking about opening the wooden blinds by the bath, do not pry them open - it is motorised and the controls are located by the sink area.
As always, the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore does a great job in ensuring that my personal amenities that I have pre-requested for are delivered - this is part my benefits for being a Jade member in the Golden Circle program (which gives you complimentary breakfast too!). To be honest, having stayed at the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore as well as the Hotel Jens in Singapore on multiple occasions, I do not think that they have failed to deliver on this aspect even once. The Golden Circle program is truly one of those underrated loyalty programs in Asia-Pacific that too little people know about. I received a cup of instant noodles, a fruit platter, some chocolates as well as some cookies and milk.
As I have observed during my previous stay, the air-conditioning here in the Garden Wing is able to transform Summer into Winter so long you keep your balcony doors closed. I took a walk around the Garden Wing after settling in to my room (and setting the air-con at its lowest). The Garden Wing always provides such an amazing feeling. I guess it has to do with the fact that one of Singapore's busiest street, Orchard Road, is located just minutes away and yet an oasis like this exists in the heart of it all.
As part of the "Time Out" Weekend Staycation Package, a three-tier English afternoon tea set was served at Lobby Court. Your preferred timing for these inclusions will be verified during check-in. Just let the person checking you in know what time you would like to enjoy these benefits and they will proceed with the necessary reservations.
The three-tier English afternoon tea set consists of some sandwiches, scones and desserts. You will also get a selection of coffee and tea for each adult. While I was seated almost immediately at the Lobby Court, the three-tier took close to 45 minutes to come - this is pretty appalling since the contents of the afternoon tea set came from Rose Veranda which was just moments away. While the Lobby Court provides a comfortable environment to lounge in, having to check on my order three times is just a little too much.
The "Time Out" Weekend Staycation Package offers a pretty novel experience - one that I have not actually experienced myself prior to this. As part of the room package, you will get a mixologist sent up to your room (at your preferred time) with a bottle of Prosecco and some mixers. At approximately 6PM, I heard the door bell rang and I was greeted by Ramesh and his team member with a meal trolley containing a bottle of Prosecco and three mixers - raspberry, mango and blueberry.
Ramesh quickly introduced himself and inquired about my personal preferences before proceeding to demonstrate how a Bellini is made. The steps were pretty simple but I have to say that having a mixologist sent up to the room to prepare drinks made me feel pretty special. I would not say this was necessary (honestly, I would very much prefer a bottle of Prosecco on ice delivered to my room) but life is all about experiences.
The entire bottle of Prosecco is yours to keep and don't worry, Ramesh is not going to be there for the whole hour so you do not have to worry about making conversation while they stand around to watch you sip your drink. I ended up drinking it straight from the bottle instead of utilising the mixers.
After a really filling Afternoon Tea at the Lobby Court and Bellini Hour in my very own room, I decided it would be best to stay put for the evening ahead and not head out for dinner instead. Besides, I have everything I need in my room - including that cup of instant noodles which came complimentary with my Golden Circle Jade status.
In case you are wondering what the movie marathon in the "Time Out" Weekend Staycation Package is, you will basically get an Apple TV connected in your room (this is not available in the regular rooms and only available as part of the "Time Out" Weekend Staycation Package). From there, you will be able to watch anything on Netflix and spend your entire evening in bed (like I did) - I ended up watching reruns of Brooklyn Nine Nine and some cooking show. Of course, there's always the option to watch an actual 'movie marathon' with whatever that is on Netflix Singapore.
I headed out to my private balcony and was greeted with a beautiful sunset. If you still want to head out, remember the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore runs an hourly shuttle to Orchard Road with the final one departing at 8PM - do check with the concierge for the latest timings. If you are feeling lazy, you should also check out The Waterfall for some delicious Southern Italian dishes.
I made use of the morning to get a little bit of sun and to take a dip in one of Singapore's most beautiful hotel swimming pools. Not many people actually realise that it is possible to get a Health Club membership at the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore - this allows you to use the gym, swimming pool and tennis facilities on a regular basis. In fact, you will also enjoy dining and spa privileges for simply being a member. It is obviously not going to be cheap but you do get that exclusivity and even complimentary parking which may be attractive to you.
As mentioned earlier, the "Time Out" Weekend Staycation Package is inclusive of breakfast for two adults - you have the option of The Waterfall (which has a limited menu but offers a much nicer dining atmosphere) or brave the crowd at The Line (which serves a lot more food but it's a little more chaotic since guests from the Tower Wing dine here too). Since I have not been to the buffet breakfast at The Line, I decided to brave it and I was glad I did!
One of the things that I think The Line does especially well is Asian food. Sure, you may see a noodle station from time to time as part of a buffet breakfast spread but how often do you think it is actually decent? From my personal experience? Almost never (at least in Singapore!). The Line however, does them really well - I love the roast, the Asian dishes and more importantly those crispy hash browns that go perfectly with the omelettes.
With all that being said, I did think that The Line is really one of the busiest breakfast restaurants I have been to and therefore, if you are looking to spend some quiet time with your loved one under this staycation package, you may be better off enjoying a peaceful breakfast at The Waterfall instead.
I took a slow walk around the surroundings before heading back to my room at the Garden Wing and I chanced upon this peculiar structure. While it isn't complete, I understand that the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore will be featuring a vast number of orchid varietals here eventually - there's even a rumour that this space could eventually be used to host a private dinner or a small solemnisation ceremony for the future lovebirds.
If you are looking for an indulging weekend in the heart of Orchard but you intend to spend most of your time indoors and within the property, the "Time Out" Weekend Staycation Package offers a really unique experience. I think that the "Time Out" Weekend Staycation Package is perfect for couples looking to getaway from the busy Singapore city life and having all that dining inclusions really help - afternoon tea, breakfast in the morning and more importantly that special Bellini hour that happens in your room.

This was a hosted media stay, though all views expressed are my own.
TRIBE Living Bangkok Sukhumvit 39 is a great value choice for budget-conscious travelers but its slightly longer walk from Phrom Phong BTS Station may make it less convenient compared to more accessible (but pricier) options in the area.
